How sleeplessness hampers weight loss?

It’s not surprising that sleeplessness is a common complaint.

Sleep is a vital part of our lives. It not only helps us to stay healthy, but it also impacts our mood, motivation, and even weight.

Sleeplessness can be caused by a number of reasons like mental illness or stress, anxiety, depression, restless leg syndrome, age, diet, exercise routine. Other causes can be irregular sleep schedules or insomnia.

Coming to the weight loss part…

A person's weight is affected by their sleep habits. Lack of sleep can lead to overeating and lack of energy which can lead to weight gain.

Sleep is a natural and necessary part of life. It is a time when the body repairs itself and rejuvenates the mind. The need for sleep varies from person to person, but the average person needs about 8 hours of it every day.

Ghrelin and Leptin are 2 neurotransmitters that play an important role in regulating your appetite.

Ghrelin – promotes hunger

Leptin – provides satiety

A lack of sleep may affect the body’s regulation of these neurotransmitters. Several studies indicate that sleep deprivation increases ghrelin levels due to which people end up eating more and gaining weight. Poor sleep can lead to metabolic dysregulation, also, it will increase oxidative stress, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

Longer you stay awake, the more you try to eat something.

It’s time to work upon your sleep pattern…

Must try this out!!!

  1. Avoid caffeine at night.

  2. Do not overly fill your bellies.

  3. Reserve bed only for sleep.

  4. Try warm milk or chamomile tea before going to bed.

  5. Indulge in some physical activity.

  6. Keep your phone aside while sleeping.

  7. Try to do yoga, as it helps to calm your mind and body.

  8. Avoid big meals, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol in the lead-up to bedtime.

  9. Make sure your bedroom is set to a pleasant temperature. The cooler the better.

See a doctor. If your sleeping problems are severe, long-term, or worsening, it’s important to see a doctor who can work with you to try to identify a cause and recommend optimal treatment.
