Digestion is an important process because the body needs nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water) from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy. We know that the digestive system breaks nutrients into parts small enough for your body to absorb and use for energy, growth, and cell repair.

First thing we all know that if digestive system is off than our whole body gets affected like start from headache to all sorts of health issues which includes digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn or gas. If these are not fixed or attended, then this can lead to some chronic disorders. So, what we need to do to improve digestion and to keep the digestive system healthy. Here are some tips to follow.

  1. Chew the food properly - Good digestion starts in the mouth. Make sure that you always chew on your food well which eases the task required from the digestive system so the body can focus on other tasks instead.

  2. Try probiotics - Probiotics are "good" bacteria and are living microorganisms which helps to improve your gut health. Research shows they may help if you have diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are easily available in yoghurt, pickles, and some cheeses.

  3. Stay hydrated - Water is important for digestion. We need water to digest the food and absorb the nutrients from food. Most of the people with digestive problems are extremely dehydrated. Start increasing your water intake now slowly. Fluids help your body to get rid of waste and stay regular. Your doctor or a dietitian can tell you how much you should drink and the best types to choose. But you need to drink water between meals rather than with meals to avoid diluting stomach acid which is vital for optimal digestion.

  4. Get Moving To Beat Bloating - Physical activity helps your body’s digestive system move things along and let go of waste.

  5. Shrink Your Plate - A great way to help prevent indigestion, bloating, heartburn, and other digestive health problems is to eat smaller meals more often.

  6. Fiber Helps - Including 20-35gm of fiber in diet helps with digestion and constipation. Consume Cereals such as whole wheat, maize, oats, soya etc. at least 3 times a day. Multigrain should be a part of your daily diet. Also include vegetables 2-3 times a day to receive micronutrients like calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium.

  7. Manage your stress – stress can mess up your digestion problem so reduce it so that it won’t create any havoc. There are many ways to reduce stress by listening to some soothing music, meditation, walking, and yoga.

  8. Aim to get an average 8 hours of sleep daily to improve your overall health.

  9. Kick The Habit - Smoking weakens the valve at the end of the oesophagus (the tube that goes from your mouth to your stomach). That can lead to acid reflux and heartburn. So put full stop to your smoking habits.

You should know what you eat, when you eat, and how you eat. These are very important factors for a proper food and healthy lifestyle to maintain. Know your own body so that you can make your own choices based on what works for your body.
